This morning I had my first doctor's appointment! Actually, it was with the OB nurse. I meet with the Dr. at my 10 week visit. This was more of an informational appointment-- SO much information!
She took my height and inital weight (5'7, 145) but she said her scale is probably off-- which I agree, because I thought I weighed 154-156. So I will go by the next weigh-in on 3/19 with my Dr. She said the doctor would like for me to gain between 20-30 pounds, which is about average I hear. I should work out regularly without letting my heart rate exceed 140. I can continue ellipticals and weights, but no ab workouts. She gave me lists of foods not to eat, what to eat, how much to eat. The only difficult issue with food is when I am nauseous, all I want is crackers! I keep telling myself that it will be okay, just grab some crackers and chow down! but I know in the end (with Dave's wonderful support of saying NO!) that it will only make me sicker.
The nurse also calculated our due date!!! OCTOBER 14!!
She also spoke to me about all the testing that I can have (at 11-13 weeks) ultrasound to test for down, bloodtest to test for cystic fibrosis, and another blood test at 16-18 weeks to test for genetic defects. Dave and I decided to go ahead and have all the testing done, so that way if there is something wrong, we can be as prepared as possible, and hopefully, the doctors can make sure the baby is healthy otherwise.
The nurse then talked to me about pre-registering with the hospital about two months prior to delivery so that admission with go smoothly. I will be delivering at Toledo Hospital. She also mentioned about signing up for birthing classes-- it includes delivery, breathing techniques, taking care of baby, and breast feeding classes-- all in one. She also mentioned finding a pediatrition or family doctor for the baby about a month before delivery so that appointments for the baby can be scheduled and the information already in the baby's chart.
I received tons! of free swag, which I thought was too funny-- luckily I brought a huge bag with me! Travel tote, changing pad, formula, pregnancy/baby planner, coupons, so much stuff! It made me feel alittle strange taking all of these items, because it is still hard for me to be 'super' stoked because the fear of loosing this precious baby is still lingering in my mind. This is around the time we lost peanut, and I am very nervous and want to get through to my second trimester so that I can gain some confidence and finally be super excited and relieved about this pregnancy!
After going over all my medical history and my prior miscarrage, the nurse requested that I have an ultrasound prior to the 18-20 weeks (which is what the dr. normally suggests). She scheduled me for next friday, 3/12a t 8:30. Dave said that he would love to go to this appointment with me to see our little jellybean and hear its heartbeat!
I concluded the appointment with a slew of bloodwork, including the cystic fibrosis check-- if I am positive, then Dave will have to be checked. I also had a urine sample taken-- I will need to give one at every appointment.
The first appointment went really well, and I even saw Chris who was excited for us and really wanted to give me some relief by having an ultrasound taken soon. She will then check for the heartbeat at all the appointments thereafter so that each time I can know that my baby is alive and healthy! This is my greatest concern but I know that God will protect me and this baby and give us this child that He has chosen for us!
